Southernwood (Artemisia abrotanum L.) is native to Spain and Italy and was used in herbalism already in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It is often grown in parks and home gardens as a perennial ornamental plant. Southernwood contains essential oil with powerful insect repellent properties. In French, it is called ‘garderobe’ meaning ‘clothes protector’ as it is a moth repellent.

In the past, it was treated as a magical herb, and thanks to its aromatic volatile oils it was used during church ceremonies. Today, Southernwood Herb is often used in herbalism, but also in the kitchen in the form of an addition to meats, soups and salads.

How To Use Southernwood Herb Health Embassy

Infusion

1-3 tsp of herb Southernwood Herb pour with 200ml of hot water and leave covered for 10-15 minutes. Set aside to cool, then strain. Drink 2-3 times a day, about half an hour before eating in an amount of 100-150ml. It can be also used externally to wash the body and gargle.

Decoction

Put 1-2 tbsp of Southernwood Herb to a pot and cover with 300ml of boiling water. Cover with lid and simmer for 15-20 minutes. After this time strain the mixture. You can drink it as a tea or make a compress.

Tincture

100g of Southernwood Herb pour 500ml of 70% spirit and leave in a dark place for two weeks. Shake every few days. After two weeks, strain and pour into a dark glass dish. Drink 15-30 drops diluted with 50ml of water, half an hour before meals.

Refreshing bath

2 handfuls of Southernwood Herb pour with 3 litres of warm water and bring it to boil. Simmer covered for around 15-20 minutes, then strain and add to the bathwater.

Footbath

Pour 25g of Southernwood Herb with 3 litres of boiling water and simmer for 20 minutes under the cover. Cool it slightly, strain and soak the feet in such prepared decoction for 30 minutes.
