Soapwort - surprising soap plant

In ancient times Soapwort (Saponaria officinalis) was used as a detergent to clean fabrics. It is to believed first laundry detergent used by ancient people of Eurasia. Romans used Soapwort as a water softener. It contains saponins which create a soap-like cleaning action. Nowadays this ornamental plant is very popular in our gardens. It is easy to grow and it can be used in many ways.
