Coffee substitutes - how to prepare a perfect cuppa
What is a substitute coffee?
Coffee substitute is made of roasted grains, seeds or dried fruits which don’t contain caffeine like a natural coffee (made of Coffea plant beans). It is prepared in the same way as natural coffee so you can say that substitute coffee imitates regular one. The best thing is you can drink with coffee all day, including the evening because it won’t cause insomnia.
There are several different types of roasted beverages. Here are some examples of coffee substitute – Acorn Coffee, Hemp Coffee, Spelt Coffee. Some other ingredients used are almond, chicory root, beetroot, rye, barley.
How to brew substitute coffee?
There are many ways to brew the drink. It depends totally on you which you are going to choose. Read some tips and enjoy.
- Filter/Chemex – it is the easiest way to make a coffee. Just use a simple paper filter, put some coffee substitute (e.g. Spelt Coffee) and pour hot water. Wait a few minutes until the water goes through the filter.
- Boiling (Turkish coffee) – you need a special Turkish pot. Place your pot of cold water on the stove. Add coffee (1 tablespoon) and sugar or cinnamon (1 teaspoon). Stir several times until the brew starts to foam. Don’t let the coffee boil. Take the pot off the heat source, let it cool down and repeat the process once or twice. The coffee should be served in small cups.
- Aeropress – this new ‘device’ is the best way to make an espresso. You can use a coffee substitute (e.g. Acorn Coffee) and follow the instruction. The coffee is made straight away.
- French press - Add the coffee substitute (e.g. Hemp Coffee), add the water, let it steep and press the plunger after 3-5 minutes.
- Moka pot – This method is kind of tricky. Add the heated water (90°C) and fill to the line in the bottom of the Moka pot. Insert the filter basket into the brewer's bottom and fill it with the coffee substitute. Screw the top and bottom together. Put on the stove, use moderate heat. Leave the top lid open. The coffee will begin to come out and you will hear a puffing sound and see a stream. Once the stream is the colour of yellow honey, remove it from the heat source and close the lid. Put Moka pot bottom under cold tap water to stop the extraction.
Types of coffee substitutes
- Chicory Root Coffee - is a beverage made using the roots of the chicory plant, which are roasted, ground and brewed into a coffee-like drink. It has a woody and nutty flavour. Chicory Root Coffee contains inulin fibre, a type of prebiotic that promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. Chicory Root Coffee also is rich in several nutrients and can be drunk in the morning and evening as well (caffeine-free). You can add some milk, honey, cinnamon or cardamom to improve the taste.
- Acorn Coffee – made of roasted and grounded acorns, it has a bitter taste (because of its high tannin content), so add some sugar or milk. Acorn Coffee is rich in proteins and starch, it makes you feel full for a long time. It also has minerals and vitamins. It is naturally caffeine-free. Acorn Coffee is a warm comforting drink, perfect for cold winter days.
- Spelt Coffee – spelt is a type of wheat. It contains minerals (a very high content of manganese, phosphorus, niacin), soluble protein, and vitamins. Spelt Coffee also contains gluten so it is not suitable for people with celiac disease. It is recommended for those who have digestive issues since it is not acidic like natural coffee.
- Hemp Coffee – is made of grounded Hemp seeds (Cannabis sativa plant). It is less acidic and much less bitter than regular coffee, has no caffeine. It contains CBD (cannabidiol), a non-psychoactive compound. It is also rich in Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. Some treat Hemp Coffee as a natural therapy in combating health problems, such as anxiety, depression, migraines. You should add some oil (e.g. coconut oil or butter) to your hemp drink because CBD will dissolve in fats.
